When you think of Arizona, what immediately comes to mind? Okay, okay—besides the million-degree summers 😅. I’d argue one of the very first images is those gorgeous, towering saguaro cacti.
Whether you’re visiting Arizona or you’re a local, photos with iconic desert cacti are an absolute MUST. They’re timeless, uniquely Arizona, and make the dreamiest backdrop for family photos.
While you can technically find cactus just about anywhere in the state, I was searching for something very specific to match my light and airy photography style. After lots of exploring, I found the perfect spot for desert family photos in Mesa, Arizona. Tucked just outside the city is Usery Regional Mountain Park—and it truly checks every box. Entry is currently $7 per vehicle, and as of January 1, 2026, it will increase to $10 per vehicle.
One of my top priorities when choosing a desert location was the amount of cactus. A few scattered saguaros are nice, but I wanted that full, immersive desert feel. Usery is filled with towering saguaros as far as the eye can see—it’s a desert heaven (which is exactly how I describe it in my complimentary location guide).
Accessibility was another huge factor. As a family photographer serving Gilbert, Arizona and surrounding areas, I work with growing families, mamas-to-be, and little ones all the time. I wanted a location that didn’t require a long hike just to reach a good photo spot. Usery offers easy, family-friendly trails that are safe and manageable for pregnant mamas and young kiddos. A short walk in almost any direction leads to a beautiful place to capture your family’s memories.
Lastly, I wanted variety. Desert landscapes can be stunning on their own, but I love incorporating soft floral elements into my sessions whenever possible. Usery does not disappoint. In the fall, I captured budding blossoms, along with layers of desert brush, textured rocks, and stunning mountain views in the background. The diversity here makes each session feel unique while still keeping that classic Arizona desert look.
